The architectural design for the Museum of Architecture and Design is rooted in the concept of celebrating the everyday. The building itself is envisioned as an oversize, archetypal house. Through its simplicity and relatability, the museum invites everyone to explore and appreciate the ordinary in an extraordinary way.

The project celebrates architecture and design through a universal, welcoming house open to all, seamlessly integrated into Helsinki’s urban fabric. Conceived as a place of gathering, it offers warm, functional spaces that bring together shared foundations, areas for exchange, and exhibition spaces. Designed like a theatre foyer, it encourages encounters and interaction, delivering a generous and dynamic experience. Its circular geometry energises the surrounding public realm and establishes a strong dialogue with the city. By connecting squares, waterfronts, and logistical spaces, the project becomes a true urban hub, supporting exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and public events through an inclusive, contemporary approach.

This place links the museum’s programmes—galleries, workshops, and conference spaces—while offering an inviting, everyday experience. Designed to host temporary exhibitions and events, it provides sweeping views over the city and the harbour. Drawing on materials from both the biosphere and the technosphere, the project embraces sustainability through recycling and reuse, expressing essential ecological and social values.
The first floor brings together the house’s main functions within a generous, flexible space that encourages encounter and exchange. Adaptable to visitors’ needs and to temporary transformations, it welcomes all generations—artists, visitors, and artworks alike. Dedicated meeting points are integrated through modular furniture. Oriented toward the city, the workshops act as a visible space of making and leisure, strengthening the dialogue with the surrounding urban context.
